Harry loses it.

Snape/Harry  |  PG-13  |  350 words  |  August 2004

"CRUCIO, YOU GREASY MOTHERFUCKER!!" It had been ten years since he'd tried the Cruciatus, and it was no more effective now than it had been then. The man at his feet tensed but took the chance he was given, and Harry found himself backing up as Severus Snape stalked closer.

"I see some things never change, Potter. You never had the stones to take me on." The growled vulgarity clashed with the velvet tones.

"Go ahead, then. Do it." Harry's back came up hard against a wall, and he stopped. His heart was pounding, and his body sang with adrenaline. Green fire shot from his eyes, quickly extinguished by the ice emanating from Snape.

"You forget yourself, Professor Potter. We are in a classroom. Your classroom." Harry had, in fact, forgotten himself. But he didn't back down, and he didn't think Snape noticed.

"Oh, no. This is Defense Against the Dark Arts. It's time they knew, time they saw some darkness. Why don't you show them what a real Death Eater can do?" The students, who had been watching in stunned silence, gasped as one and edged toward the door. Snape's lip curled, and Harry was sure he had him. He waited, and then whispered venomously, "Now who doesn't have the stones?"

Harry saw a flash of movement, and he braced himself for the molten metal pain of the Cruciatus. Instead, the back of Snape's hand connected with his jaw. Harry staggered sideways, surprised, and Snape backed off.

"No," he snarled, spittle flying from his mouth. "You're right. I don't have the stones. Not for this. Not anymore. Words, Potter, you foolish child. You think this matters? Any of it? You've learned nothing. The war is over, boy. Grow up."

There was a sickening crack as Snape snapped his wand in two and hurled the pieces at Harry's feet. He turned on his heel, obviously disgusted, and stormed out of the chamber, robes billowing behind him. Harry sunk, spineless, to the floor.
